A new baby can bring exhaustion, swelling, shortness of breath, and a racing heart - symptoms many mothers are told to expect. But when those symptoms are new, worsening, or making it hard to rest or function, they deserve more than reassurance. What does a BNP test show? It can give a clinician a meaningful clue about whether the heart is under increased strain and whether urgent heart evaluation may be needed.

For pregnant and postpartum women, that clue can matter deeply. Peripartum cardiomyopathy, also called PPCM, is a form of heart failure that can develop toward the end of pregnancy or in the months after delivery.
